Fungi Photography by Steve Ness
Macro encounters with the fungal world — each specimen a universe of color, texture, and form hidden beneath the canopy.
The orange tooth fungus, captured by Steve exuding vivid red guttation droplets — a phenomenon where the fungus secretes excess moisture through its pores. These striking jewel-like droplets make young specimens one of the most photogenic finds in Pacific Northwest forests. Steve's DNA sequencing work has helped identify several new species in this genus.
Steve Ness is a citizen scientist, photographer, and member of the South Sound Mushroom Club with a deep fascination for the fungal world. When he's not trekking through the Pacific Northwest's Olympic National Forest, he's sending in DNA sequences and documenting the results — helping to identify and describe species new to science.
